🔥 Gas Safety
Plas Heli operates a limited mains gas system supplying the backup boilers in the Boiler Room and the gas hobs in the main kitchen. This page outlines statutory gas safety responsibilities, appliance management, emergency controls, and record‑keeping requirements.
1. Legal Framework
Plas Heli complies with:
- Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998
- HSE Approved Codes of Practice
- Local Authority Environmental Health requirements
2. Gas System Overview
The venue uses a simple, controlled mains gas system consisting of:
- Mains gas supply entering the Boiler Room
- Gas meter located inside the Boiler Room
- Main emergency shut-off valve located at the entrance to the car park
- Backup gas boilers (used only when the biomass boiler is offline)
- Gas hobs in the main kitchen
No other gas appliances or distribution systems are present on site.
3. Gas Safety Responsibilities
Gas safety responsibilities include:
- Ensuring all gas appliances are installed and maintained by Gas Safe registered engineers
- Annual gas safety inspections
- Maintaining clear access to the emergency shut-off valve
- Ensuring kitchen staff are trained in emergency shut-off procedures
- Monitoring boiler performance and reporting faults immediately
4. Gas Appliances
Backup Gas Boilers
The gas boilers in the Boiler Room are used only when the biomass boiler is offline. They are maintained under a Gas Safe service contract and inspected annually.
Main Kitchen Gas Hobs
The gas hobs in the main kitchen are used for food preparation and must be operated only by trained staff. Daily visual checks are carried out to ensure:
- No smell of gas
- Burners ignite correctly
- Flames burn blue and stable
- Ventilation is operating
5. Emergency Controls
Emergency gas controls are clearly identified and accessible:
- Main gas shut-off valve: located at the entrance to the car park
- Boiler Room shut-off: adjacent to the gas meter
- Automatic gas shut-off: gas supply is automatically isolated if the fire alarm system is triggered
- Kitchen emergency cut-off: a clearly labelled emergency gas cut-off push button in the main kitchen to isolate gas to the hobs
- Emergency signage displayed at all gas isolation points
6. Fault Reporting
Any suspected gas leak or appliance fault must be reported immediately to:
- Venue Manager
- Duty Manager
- Gas Safe contractor (if required)
In the event of a gas smell:
- Do not operate electrical switches
- Open doors and windows
- Evacuate the area
- Isolate gas at the shut-off valve or kitchen emergency cut-off
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service: 0800 111 999
7. Record Keeping
Gas safety records must be retained for at least 5 years, including:
- Annual Gas Safe inspection certificates
- Boiler service records
- Kitchen gas hob maintenance records
- Emergency shut-off and cut-off tests
- Fault reports and corrective actions
8. Event Considerations
Event organisers must ensure:
- No temporary gas appliances are brought on site
- Catering contractors use only electric equipment unless specifically authorised
- Access to the Boiler Room, main shut-off valve, and kitchen emergency cut-off remains unobstructed
- Any gas-related issues are reported immediately
